SCHERZO (Dialogue with a Statue) by Rafael Guizado
The spirit of a late head of state, The Man, looks forward to resting in peace, only to find that he’s trapped inside his memorial statue and forced to hear what visitors truly think of him. The harshest criticism comes from the ground he stands on. The Man’s sensual and sassy companion, The Earth, goads him into a dialogue examining the reality and consequences of his legacy.
Gig Guizado is a performer, playwright, and translator. Her adaptation of Rafael Guizado's Symphony for Six Actors was featured in Out of the Wings Festival 2017. At the American Literary Translators Association conference, Gigi collaborated with Catherine Boyle and Sophie Stevens on “Out of the Wings: Testing and Advocating for Translation in Performance” and improvised with Trine Garrett of [Foreign Affairs] in “Translation Centre Stage”.
Scherzo was originally performed in 1948 as a radio play on La Radiodifusora Nacional, the national radio where Rafael Guizado served as the founding director. The first stage production was at Colombia’s national theatre, El Teatro Nacional.
Sarah O'Connell Assumed the role of Artistic Director in 2003. Originally from San Francisco Bay Area, she served as the Associate Artistic Director of Impact Theatre. She holds a Master of Drama degree in Directing from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS). Her work has been performed throughout the US, UK, Europe, and South America and includes several regional and world premieres. She is an alumnus of the Director's Labs in L.A. and Chicago, and La Mama ETC in Umbria. In addition to teaching at UNLV, she has worked at American Conservatory Theatre, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, the San Francisco Mime Troupe, and Glasgow's Theatre Cryptic. She is the Founding Executive Director of EatMoreArtVegas.com, the VP of the Producers Alliance of Southern Nevada (PALSNV), and the Executive Director of the Henderson Symphony Orchestra.
