FREE TO READ staged reading event in a partnership marking Banned Books Week.
Join professional performers in a celebration of Free Expression and our First Amendment at Clark County Library Theatre, 1401 E. Flamingo Rd., Las Vegas on Monday, September 23rd, 2024, at 7 PM.
Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read, and spotlights attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. In a time of intense political polarization, library staff in every state are facing an unprecedented number of attempts to ban books. The American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom documented record demands to censor library books and resources in 2023, the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data; most were by or about LGBTQIA+ persons and Black, Indigenous, and people of color.
Sarah O'Connell The Asylum’s Artistic Director, Sarah O’Connell, will direct and produce the performance featuring local favorites from the local arts and culture community, and the books that empower us.
"We are honored to celebrate democracy and share the stories that inspire us in partnership with the Library District. The Asylum was established as a haven for artists’ voices; we honor artists, writers, and the humanity they reflect currently enduring acts of oppression around the world, including the United States.”
